Water-Based or Silicone Based Lube – Which Lube to Use?

Water-Based or Silicone Based Lube – Which Lube to Use?

It can be confusing to know what kind of lube, including all of the kinds we offer on our site, is going to be the perfect choice for our particular needs and desires, and that decision is easiest to make with lots of information about the differences – and similarities – of lubricants.

So, let’s look at the difference between two basic lube types: water-based lube and silicone lube.

Water-based lube is extremely popular, and for very good reason. It is safe to use with any toy material, and washes out of fabric easily and without leaving stains. It’s also compatible with any barriers (like dental dams) that you might wish to use during oral sex, and high quality water based lubricants do not have any chemical taste or smell that might hinder your enjoyment. However, some water-based lubes have ingredients that some women have found problematic. Glycerine, parabens, additives, and preservatives can cause irritations or infections for some people. For others, especially those who enjoy longer play sessions with their lover, water-based lubes can dry up quicker than desired, requiring the lube be reapplied more often.

We love the water-based lube MixGliss. Its non-glycerine based formula keeps it from getting sticky as it dries, and there are no additives to irritate delicate tissue. It’s also made with organic plant extracts, which nourish and soothe skin.

Silicone lube is newer on the market, but has become a very popular lubrication solution for a variety of kinds of sexual pleasure. It lasts for a very long time, as it does not dry up or absorb into the skin. It’s also cost effective, as a tiny amount of silicone lube will last substantially longer than a water-based lubricant, so you need to reapply it less frequently. And because it does not need additional ingredients, the chance of it causing irritation or allergic reactions is extraordinarily minimal.

Silicone lube does have some drawbacks, however. Because isn’t not an easy-to-clean formula, it can stain fabric if it gets spilled (or if too much lubricant is used). Additionally, some silicone toys may interact poorly with silicone lubes, so many toy owners may want to use water-based lube with their favorite dildos in order to keep them in perfect condition. If you use Silicone lube with sex toys you will need to clean your sex toy after using it so the silicone lube do not damage your toy.

Uberlube has one of the best silicone lubes we’ve found. Its silky feel is incomparable, and it’s combination of high quality silicone, with a touch of vitamin E oil, protects the skin while keeping everything slick and sexy. It even comes in a small travel size, to discreetly tuck into your purse or toiletry kit for travel.

Which one is the right choice for you?

We recommend thinking about what kinds of intimacy that you want lube to improve, as well as your own needs, in terms of sensitivities or other physical concerns. Of course, many women keep both in their bedside table, because sometimes, having the right product for the job means having more than just one product available!
