Originating in 1999, TDOR emerged as a response to the brutal murder of Rita Hester, a transgender woman of color. The event was initially organized by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith, who sought to create a space for collective remembrance and activism against transphobia. Since then, TDOR has grown into an international movement, uniting communities around the globe in a shared commitment to acknowledging and addressing the systemic violence faced by transgender individuals.
